Capturing the Essence of Rainbow Beach Living
Challenges and Triumphs in the Construction Process
Standing on a vacant block of land near the Carlos Sand Blow at Rainbow Beach, we were initially shown the breathtaking views of Double Island Point to the east and Fraser Island to the north. We were tasked with designing a holiday home that would capture these views while maintaining a low-maintenance design, which was a challenge given the exposure to the open ocean with vast amounts of salt in the air and sand everywhere.
We feel that we successfully met the owner's brief, particularly with their desire to see the conditions of the Wide Bay Bar from the deck, enabling them to determine if it’s suitable for fishing. The house, a large 450m2 high-set dwelling perched on a thin strip of land falling away on either side of the hill, presented numerous detailed challenges throughout the build.
Everything about this build was intricate and detailed, beginning with the 9m screw piers to ensure a sturdy foundation that won’t succumb to future erosion. The massive timber beam cantilevered out over a pitched roof with a raked ceiling successfully captures the open ocean view.
The separated upper and lower living is perfect for entertaining two families over the school holidays. The 6m ceiling in the entryway features stone tiling to the entirety of that wall, creating a grand entrance. Open-housed stained timber stairs with LED strip lighting recessed into each tread add a modern and elegant touch with an element of safety. The ‘My Electric’ electrical system is fully automated and can be controlled from your phone, offering convenience and ease of use.
The home features open-plan living, with a raked ceiling reaching up to 3.6m high, creating a spacious and airy atmosphere. Using materials that will stand the test of time and require minimal maintenance, such as ultra Colorbond for added protection and aluminium timber-look feature cladding, ensures the longevity and durability of the property. Additionally, the house is equipped with a frameless glass balustrade, floor-to-ceiling tiles, a built-in BBQ and kitchen area, an out-of-ground pool, VJ cladding to feature walls in each bedroom, a large kitchen, a separate bar, and three massive entertaining areas.
The owner is delighted with the final product, and so are we. This build took six months from start to finish, a credit to our team given the challenging logistics of getting to and from Rainbow Beach during these trying times.
